Dear Friends:
On May 20th, qualified voters of the Webster Central School District, will be asked to vote on the 2008-2009 budget proposal, Proposition 1 (purchase of school buses), and elect two candidates to the Webster Board of Education.
If you are asking the question “why vote”, please consider the following:
Because you can. In many nations of the world, and in most states of our union, citizens do not have the right to vote on the spending plans developed by their school districts.
Because you set an example. The students we serve notice whether or not the adults in their lives exercise their civic responsibilities. We set an example whether or not we vote.
Because you show respect for what educators do. Working with all the students that show up is a very difficult challenge. By taking the time to vote, you acknowledge this challenge.
Because public education matters. Our public schools educate by far the greatest number of our next generation-those to whom we will be turning over the reins of government and business, and those who will be caring for our generation as we get older.
Because your community and its children depend on you. The folk wisdom “it takes a whole community to raise a child” is appropriate here. We all share the responsibility to see that all students are educated. While you may not be actively involved with what occurs in classrooms, you can share your opinion by voting.
Voter eligibility – Residents must be:
1) At least 18 years of age or older;
2) A citizen of the United States
3) A resident of the school district for at least 30 days prior to the vote.
4) Have one proof of residency such as driver’s license or utility bill.
Voting will take place at Webster Schroeder High School, 875 Ridge Road between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.
Thank you for consideration.
Respectfully,
Adele Bovard, Superintendent of Schools
